Smile!

It’s meant to be fun. Really, it is.

Do you ever feel like skiing has never clicked with you? That no matter how many times you drag yourself up and tumble down the slopes, you can never quite bring yourself to enjoy it? It seems that everyone else is having fun, why can’t you?

I have good news for you, everyone has hit this point in their skiing, no matter how briefly. However, if it isn’t just a brief moment for you, there is more than likely a reason for it. Skiing isn’t meant to be hard, or exhausting. You shouldn’t reach the end of the day with thighs burning and feet throbbing, unless that was your intention!

If any of the above resonates with you, the chances are that you are pushing yourself beyond your ability or your confidence level. Maybe you are trying to keep up with friends, family or just pushing yourself a little too far. This is perfectly normal, don’t beat yourself up over it. However, if it means that skiing has becoming an unpleasant activity for you, consider taking a step back, slow down, choose the easier route down and slip in a snowplough here and there. It’s just a tool, you can use it without shame. There shouldn’t be any pressure from your companions to go faster and if you feel like there is, consider skiing half of the day with them and half by yourself. I’d imagine there’ll even be someone else in the group that also fancies a change of pace.

Should confidence be an issue or you feel as if you’ve hit a wall with your skiing, taking a lesson can really help. Skiing with someone who knows the mountain inside out can remove stress and help you focus on what you came on holiday to do, enjoy your time in the mountains. A good instructor will also be skilled in knowing where your comfort and skill levels lie and will put you in positions where you can further your skills without feeling like every turn will sending you shooting off to your doom.

All in all, if you feel as though skiing is too much for you, take it easy, return to basics and if you can, consider taking a lesson. Skiing can be exciting but it’s also a holiday, don’t forget to relax and ski where you feel comfortable. If you can’t smile, then you’re in the wrong spot!

Ski you next time.
